Roadworthy Bike?

September 25th, 2017

Recent national media has followed a tragic event involving a
cyclist and a pedestrian.

We just wanted to take a moment to highlight the importance of
staying familiar with the Highway Code and the rules which are set out to help
keep everyone safe.

The Highway Code states that every pedal
cycle must have efficient brakes.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/the-highway-code/rules-for-cyclists-59-to-82

In addition
to Annex 1: “You and your bicycle”.

Of course, all road users are personally
responsible for making sure that their knowledge of The Highway Code is up to
date and that they use the road network in a safe and responsible manner.

Although cycling is generally a safe
activity, there are a number of collisions between cyclists and motorists each
year.

The Highway Code contains a section entitled “road users requiring
extra care” which aims to educate and remind drivers of the needs of more
vulnerable road users such as cyclists: https://www.gov.uk/road-users-requiring-extra-
care-204-to-225

Summer events

July 10th, 2017

In the last 2 weeks, Cycle Southend have been busy around town! Sunday 1st July saw our annual Tweed ride. A jolly time was had by all as we cycled in our vintage get-ups along the Prittlebrook, seafront and down to Southchurch Park for a sunny afternoon tea. Check back to find out more about our 2018 Anniversary Tweed spectacular! Saturday 8th July saw us with our North Shore Track in Chalkwell Park at The Village Green. We were joined by Cycle UK to help with the track as well as the Ideas in Motion South East Essex Travel advisors. Another sunny day with lots of visitors!

Bikeability!

May 17th, 2017

Always great to get some feedback for our schools on the success of our Bikeability program. In Southend we offer Bikeability training to all students at schools in the Southend Borough. Level 1 is usually offered in year 4, followed up by Level 2 in year 6. Make sure you get your place, check with your school office if you have not received a consent form and check that your school has accepted the offer of Bikeability from us. In the meantime, practice, practice, practice! All free Bikeability is dependant on DFT funding, but all training is available at cost to all schools. For those that may miss out we run courses in the School Holidays too. Check out our event and activities page for the next dates. Bikeability isn’t just for kids, we can teach your Mums and Dads too! Cycle Training or buddying up with one of qualified Instructors is also available, just contact us!

Use the seafront cycle path to visit the Poppies wave!

April 20th, 2017

The poppies wave is here until June, you can visit any time by bike. The Wave has been designed against the fantastic backdrop of the Thames Estuary. The spectacular sculpture features a sweeping arch of bright red poppy heads suspended on towering stalks, which will rise up from Barge Pier to create a spectacular wave towards the Thames Estuary. You can pick up the cycle path anywhere from Chalkwell Shelter to Shoebury East Beach, drop us a line if you would like us to post you a map of all cycle routes in Southend.

Reduce cycle theft project!

April 20th, 2017

A groundbreaking partnership project is set to reduce cycle theft on the C2C train line. The British Police have reached out to both The Comfy Saddle and Cycles UK to help them reduce cycle theft on the C2C line, in partnership with the Southend Road Safety unit and Cycle Southend of Southend borough Council. The group will be offering free cycle marking and entry on to the bike register database, at the majority of train stations from Shoebury to Upminster. Bicycle marking , using the BikeRegister Selectmark system reduces the risk of theft and also significantly increases the likelihood that stolen bicycle will be returned to it’s rightful owner. The dates of the Southend area events are: Leigh on Sea 17th May Shoeburyness 24th May Chalkwell 14th June Thorpe Bay 28th June Westcliff 12th July Southend East 26th July Southend Central 9th June. 6.00-8.00am
