Victoria Avenue cycleway/footway

January 28th, 2013

Reconstruction and improvement – Victoria Avenue cycleway/footway Published Wednesday 23rd January 13 in Council – news and information releases news

Southend-on-Sea Borough Council will shortly begin carrying out improvements to the segregated cycleway/footway on the east side of Victoria Avenue.

A section of the cycleway/footway between St Mary’s Road and Priory Crescent is in need of reconstruction.

The improvements are necessary to bring its layout and surface conditions up to modern standards in line with the Council’s commitment to support sustainable modes of transport.

In addition to repairing and enhancing this section improvements will be made to the layout of the cycleway/footway around the junction of Victoria Avenue and St Mary’s Road.

The improvements will involve the removal of unnecessary street furniture and simplifying the design of the junction for the benefit of all users.

Work is planned to start on Monday 4th February and is anticipated to last for six weeks.

The work is being jointly funded by the Department for Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund and the EC’s ‘Bike Friendly Cities’ initiative.

It will be necessary at times to close off one southbound lane on Victoria Avenue to allow safe working space for contractors, although this will only occur between 9.30am and 3.30pm.

It will also be necessary to prevent vehicular access to St.Marys Road when that part of the works is being carried out.

The Council would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the works, but hopes residents understand that the improvements are necessary.
