Bikeability
If you want to ride your bike then you need to show you have Bikeability!
Bikeability are lessons that will help you have even more fun on your bike and teach you important road skills. They're really important and will help you learn all the basics you need to get the most out of your ride. You can then enjoy riding on roads with friends. The three levels of Bikeability will teach you how to stay safe and give you all the skills and confidence you need to get out and about on your bike.
The Basics
What will you learn in Bikeability Level 1?
Your first step is learning how your bike works and how to make it move. By the time you've finished Level 1 you will be able to ride anywhere without cars and you'll be ready to start road training. Level 1 will teach you how to make sure your bike is ready to ride, how to get your bike moving and how to control it and stay in control safely.
But Level 1 is just the first step... keep going! Check out what's next in Level 2!
Intermediate
What's Next in Level 2?
This is time you'll be out in real traffic – but only on quiet roads. By the time you've finished Level 2 you will be able to travel down quiet roads safely – you might even be able to ride your bike to school!
Level 2 will teach you awareness of other road users, how to position yourself on a road and how to stay safe.
But why stop there? Level 3 is in sight... nearly there!
Advanced Cycling
Why Stop, Keep On Going to Level 3?
You'll probably start Level 3 once you're at secondary school. It will help you learn the advanced skills you need to ride on busier roads. It's a bit like learning to drive a car and, when you've finished, you'll be able to ride your bike safely pretty much anywhere around Southend... or anywhere in the UK! Level 3 will teach you how to negotiate busier roads and traffic junctions and will help you plan routes for longer, safer journeys.

Your Special School Programme!
Special Schools Programmes Just for You! Kingsdown and St Christopher's schools are already involved so why not get your school involved in the Special Schools Cycling Programme?
With special schools we can alter the programme to suit the specialist requirements you and your classmates have! We can involve your teachers and can allow extra time to complete the courses so that you can pass your Bikeability levels or even just so you can have more time riding your bike!
We can send additional instructors to work with your teachers and also change the learning style to 'learning through play' for some of the students.
We can also work with – and cycle train to Bikeability Level – Southend's home-educated children's group. Bringing together children from across the borough who would normally miss out on mainstream school programmes!
